WWD Reader Profile: Maurice Cherry, Designer/Blogger/Entrepreneur
What gear and software do you use, and why?
On the software end, the tools that help me be great are few. WebWorkerDaily readers are a diverse bunch. Every week, I profile a different reader and ask them to share what they do, how they do it, and some of their favorite hints and tips.
Who are you and what do you do?

Confessions of a Freeware Junkie
Here’s my list of places to find the best free stuff — from freeware software to free web apps and services — now.
FileHippo doesn’t have a freeware-only section like the other sites in this round-up but I’m including it because I love its Update Checker tool that auto-updates a ton of applications installed on your system.
I have to come clean and admit that I love freeware. Yes, I know that everyone likes getting something for nothing, but I’m talking about a lifelong addiction here.

The problem of incentives in knowledge work
I’m struggling with the issue of incentives in organizations trying to promote improved knowledge management and more effective use of new collaboration tools such as blogs, wikis, and the like. The underlying issue is that focusing on designing incentives feels safer and easier than dealing with the hard managerial work of sitting down one-on-one with the individuals and planning out how to integrate these new tools into the day-to-day execution of knowledge work tasks. Lifehacker Readers' Free Replacements for Paid Tools
We highlighted a few of our favorite free replacements for paid tools about two weeks ago, and boy, did you respond. Photo by AGoK . Orb instead of Slingbox ($130) This one should have been obvious, considering we've taken a screenshot tour and shown how this free streaming software can work with your Wii , but Orb has just quietly provided the same services folks dish out more than 100 smackers for, or, in the case of DVR devices, endless monthly fees, without tooting its own horn too loudly. From Adobe replacments to Windows utilities, niche graphics apps to virtualization, our readers had a wealth of no-cost alternatives to recommend.

Collaboration Tools
As I mentioned in Real-Time Collaborative Editing , I had a fantastic experience participating in group editing of a Mind Map of collaborative tools during a session at Learn Trends. I would expect the document to continue to grow and change, but thought it would be worth having it available in a text format as well (so I can find it when I need it). 1Password + Dropbox = Password Sync
We always like a good utility here at WWD. But we like it even better when two of our favorite utilities start working well together. That’s the case with 1Password and Dropbox : if you’re storing your passwords (and other confidential information) in 1Password, you can now use Dropbox to keep those passwords synchronized across multiple computers. Here’s how.

The Social Software Value Matrix
Less well understood is the value of launching social software inside companies. They have to overcome their fear of transparency, learn new tools, master new lingo and communications conventions, internalize new ways of working, and change their daily routines. By launching these tools internally--within teams, departments, divisions, business units, etc.--you Mom always told me, "It's what's inside that counts." Companies are finally paying attention to how social media affects their business outside the company walls.

Year-End Thoughts On Enterprise 2.0 Social Software
is more about how social software is used by people vs. what the social tool actually is. You can use tools in ways that are not aligned with the intent of E2.0.
It has though taken the industry a long time to actually mature the underlying tooling and infrastructure to enable such solutions on a broad scale.
