Socializing
I recently tweeted an observation of David Weinberger' s on how our language has shifted: Over the past decade, we’ve gone from talking about social circles to social networks. Networks draw lines among us. I liked the way he phrased it, and I also note that it is the word social that connects the concepts because we are, at our core, social beings. A circle draws a line around us.

  • Tips on collecting data for social network analysis (SNA)
As a healthy but slight change from recent topics , I was going through some old notes and thought it might be worthwhile sharing some tips with you about collecting data for Social Network Analysis (SNA). You might also like to check out my article about social networks, titled Small World! Just as brief overview, Social Network Analysis (SNA) is a tool that provides a technique for analysing informal networks. SNA is an interesting Knowledge Management (KM) "technology" since it provides one of the few methods for making knowledge activities in an organisation visible through the analysis of relationships between people.

  • SNA study of Wikipatterns.com
Laurie Lock Lee from Optimice has published the results of a social network analysis (SNA) study of the Wikipatterns community (pdf). Laurie used SNA to examine the value of participation, health and value of new relationships of this particular community, using a combination of a survey and " wiki mining " to gather data. A couple of interesting results in relation to the value a wiki brings: " Looking at the percentage differentials, we can see that those that took on the more active roles of commenting, collaborating, editing and to a lesser

  • 2009: Planning Considerations For Enterprise 2.0
Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007 (MOSS) is a disappointing platform for social computing in my opinion. The blog is barely acceptable, the wiki is not, the decision to implement RSS rather than Atom was short-sighted and the "Corporate Facebook" capability is not that impressive. My position for some time has been that the next release will be a tipping point for Microsoft's social computing efforts. Rather than list off a "top ten" list of predictions for 2009, I thought I would briefly layout some topics and areas that business and IT decision-makers should pay attention to when formulating Enterprise 2.0

Lately, there’s been a rapidly growing number of posts declaring the need to demonstrate return on investment (ROI) in social software, but lamenting our inability to do so.  My take on ROI of social software is pretty much along the lines of Jon Mell’s and Gia Lyons’ — don’t bother!  Those types of organizations are very likely to demand a detailed business case Together, We Can! Concluding: " While through the spread of social computing KM may be coming out of an initial identity crisis, the advent and rapid spread of what is termed Enterprise 2.0 Now, I have to say that this whole KM as social computing thing is getting rather boring really and I tried my best not to get sucked into it... Social computing has also been a breath of fresh air into KM , mainly From time to time this issue raises its misinformed head - well, IMHO anyway.
