NewsGator Acquires Tomoye
NewsGator today announced that it will acquire Tomoye, a vendor that has long focused on enabling collaborative communities within the enterprise. I've only come across Tomoye in governmental settings but the vendor has been in the community space for some time. Tomoye has also been one of the vendors placing bets on SharePoint (as has NewsGator) so the deal is synergistic in that regard. In June 2008, I published a blog post Microsoft's Maturing Social Computing "EGO" , that outlined different ways that vendors could integrate with MOSS 2007 to provide social computing capabilities.

  • Collaborative Thinking: Social Networking (?) With Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007
With Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Interesting - but I remain quite skeptical - especially regarding "MOSS 2007 as your default option for enabling and managing social networks for business use". There are some others worth mentioning to round things out: Ning, WetPaint, Web Crossing, Prospero, iCohere, Tomoye, Visible Path, Tacit, Collective-X also play in this space). • Microsoft's Maturing Social Computing "EGO"
When Microsoft first released Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007), it touted the platform advantages of its embedded social computing capabilities (i.e., In fact, the company at the time was brimming with confidence that SharePoint's social computing features were as good as anything offered by best-of-breed vendors. Reality slowly set in over several months however as the market were somewhat less-than-impressed Note: updated with source references for EGO integration examples. blogs, wikis, RSS, social networking).

  • Collaborative Thinking: Why Is Social Software So Important?
For process, the group is fairly tight knit and focused, for activity the group is broader, and so on. One of the things we are thinking about at Tomoye is that communities serve the next level of engagement (community) - but defined more as engagement with a broader group, outside the immediate team or colleague with which one has a process/ activity relationship.
