Predictions for enterprise social software and social network analysis
By 2014, social networking services will replace e-mail as the primary vehicle for interpersonal communications for 20 percent of business users.
Through 2015, only 25 percent of enterprises will routinely utilize social network analysis to improve performance and productivity.
This is a particularly interesting one for me, since I have been applying social network analysis to help organizations improve their performance Gartner has released five interesting predictions for social software . Here are the predictions along with a few of my thoughts.

InSSIDer Detects Wireless Networks
Windows only: Free applicaiton inSSIDer scans networks within reach of your computer's Wi-Fi antenna, tracks signal strength over time, and determines their security settings (included whether or not they're password-protected). This must-have for hunting down Wi-Fi networks on the road is free, Windows only, requires .NET Previously mentioned NetStumbler has long been a favorite for this sort of functionality, but it doesn't work well with Vista or 64-bit XP. inSSIDer, on the other hand, works like a charm on both Vista and XP, and it's open-source to boot.

Sensemaking, PKM and networks
In a past post I elaborated on social networks like Twitter as being a Help engine; an alternative to a search engine in some cases in finding answers and making decisions.
by connecting you to a social network of people you trust who will be willing to help out in a reciprocal relationship
(which which also helps out in the re-contextualising process as you share a common wavelength or level I also paralleled this concept to the aims of KM, productivity, performance, sense-making, decision-making, etc:
“I think it’s getting us closer to the KM productivity (sense-making) aim that knowledge sharing and knowledge transfer has always aspired to, which is:

Collaborative Networks vs Social Networks
During a telephone conversation between us last week Aaron Fulkerson of MindTouch said he was going to pick up on my Collaboration Networks meme, and he has now produced a solid post on this topic.
Aaron Aaron takes on the number one issue plaguing widespread adoption of broad Enterprise 2.0 strategy: piecemeal departmental use of collaboration tools,

Knowledge flow networks
The difference here is an ecosystem is manifested where people are networked, and knowledge flows, this is much more connected for people to tap in or tune in to the social capital.
For more on this see my posts, The KM generation of networks and emergence and The KM Core Sample in relation to IM, KM 1.0, model where this type of ecosystem manifests into offshoots, that is, we start off I’ve echoed words by Dave Snowden and Jon Husband that rather than trying to create a knowledge sharing culture, we are instead creating conditions and environment for that to happen naturally via a participation model that facilitates connections and shared context.

How relevant are communities of practice in a network age?
A while back I blogged about the possibility of networks and blogospheres cutting into the need for communities. Just look at Friendfeed, it’s a network, but you can also join rooms (member groups); some are feedback rooms, news rooms, topic rooms…people still like hanging out in a place (pub/coffee shop) and contributing to the pool of info in one spot, rather than scattered in a social network. If I have a question about Friendfeed functionality I I believe this is happening a great deal, as now people may have a more purposeful or ideal way of achieving their needs

Best Buy & Enterprise Social Networking
It is a corporate sponsored social network site that is voluntary, open-source, operates outside of the corporate firewall and is moderated by its users. One of the examples of internal communications programs I’ve cited in presentations and previous posts is the Best Buy Blue Shirt Nation - an internal social network for employees of the electronics super store. Since I’m not a Best Buy employee, I’ve never been given Two videos, very informative...

Social Networking on Intranets (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox)
Jakob Nielsen sAlertbox, August 3, 2009: Social Networking on Intranets Summary: Community features are spreading from "Web 2.0" At the same time, you cant assume that all employees will be familiar with social networking services. The big difference between the open Internet and enterprise social networking is that people use the company features for work (or at least to communicate with work colleagues) and therefore retain their professional to "Enterprise 2.0." Research across 14 companies found that many are making productive use of social intranet features.
