Business 2.0 :: Blog :: Headshift
There is the over-quoted example of Goldmine giving away its geological data, Sun Microsystems and IBM giving away software, and pharmaceutical companies collaborating openly on the human genome project. These organisations havent suddenly found a corporate conscience, they are still aggressive, quarterly driven, often American companies with shareholders to answer to. The idea is that if you give away something that your competitors see as core business, you destabilise the market, and make what you charge for more valuable. Musings on Oracle/Sun re: social networking
Sun has an internal "Corporate Facebook" platform called " SunSpace ".
This could help bootstrap an Oracle effort to deliver a dedicated social network site (ala Lotus Connections) to compliment WebCenter (which is more of a portal-centric play for social networking).
There has also been a lot of interesting work regarding FOAF and SSL at Sun.
Some quick thoughts:
SunSpace could conceptually "surround" Beehive.

2009: Planning Considerations For Enterprise 2.0
IBM: Lotus Connections is holding its own but gaps remain (e.g., Sun Project SocialSite : Another project that I find interesting. I'm not convinced Sun can make it successful in the market but as an architectural model for organizations that want to socially-enabled existing web properties and applications and are interested in OpenSocial - it's well-worth a look.
Rather than list off a "top ten" list of predictions for 2009, I thought I would briefly layout some topics and areas that business and IT decision-makers should pay attention to when formulating Enterprise 2.0

Cisco WebEx Connect Questions
WebEx Connect will need a strong IdM (Identity Management) play and will do so either through expanding what exists within PostPath or through an acquisition or a deep partnership. The cloud-based identity service will be key to expand on social networking aspects that will emerge around WebEx Connect.
What about offline - does WebEx Connect implement Dojo Offline which is based on Google Gears? Recommendation: People should be examining Cisco's announcements this week more broadly that just a SaaS Collaboration/Web 2.0 play and/or as an update on its UC/video/telepresence
