Microsoft Got Hand(s)
s a very big year for Microsoft, in terms of the initiatives the company is launching, in particular in the consumer space (its business/commercial space is already cranking out tons of products, but the company’s focus on consumer products has hit a tipping point). Recall three of the major trends that I predicted for 2010: One, that someone will create an open gaming platform; two, that Microsoft will take second place in search share (from Yahoo); and three, that we’ll see a major advance in the user interface of the web.
From my Friday Signal over at FM's blog :

Weds. Signal: Get Me a Mobile Strategy or You're Fired!
I'm not saying having a good app isn't part of a great mobile strategy (I love what Oakley has done for surfers , for example), but one good app don't a solution make.

Collaborative Note Taking 101
For example, when I go into a client meeting, I am there from a technical documentation standpoint, and my notes reflect that. For example, you may want to make sure that project related notes are recorded by the project manager.

Microsoft Social Computing Overview
Microsoft design point is to co-mingle structured collaboration tools alongside social computing tools - it's unrealistic to think of social computing disconnected from collaborations strategies
Microsoft also thinks of the IT Pro ... Microsoft believes SharePoint scales to meet as narrow or broad a view an organization has on social computing, you can use it in a very classic Notes from Christian Finn, Director, Social Computing

E2.0 Conference: Social Computing Platforms (IBM & Microsoft)
Specifically, the tutorial I moderated on Monday that featured IBM and Microsoft.
For this event, I proposed a tutorial that would allow attendees to learn more about the social computing platforms from IBM and Microsoft from a user adoption perspective rather than a "plumbing" or infrastructure viewpoint. worked with IBM and Microsoft in the months preceding the event. I wanted to share some background information on the tutorial presented at the recent Enterprise 2.0 conference .

Microsoft's Maturing Social Computing "EGO"
Note: updated with source references for EGO integration examples.
When Microsoft first released Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007), it touted the platform advantages of its embedded social computing capabilities (i.e., Microsoft countered by delivering the Community Kit Edition via CodePlex which improved the default capabilities within MOSS. blogs, wikis, RSS, social networking). In fact, the company at the time was brimming with confidence that SharePoint's social computing features were as good as anything offered by best-of-breed vendors.

Lifehacker Confessions: The Tips and Tricks I'm Not Using
I'm pretty much useless with Microsoft Office I majored in English at college and write for a living, but if you asked me how to divide a Word document into two columns and separate them with gray space, I'd need about 20 minutes to Google and poke around. My best example? "Clean Reading Lifehacker can inspire you to reboot your computer habits, your workflow, your workspace, and even your home life. Believe me, I should know.

Collaborative Thinking: Social Networking (?) With Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007
With Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007
Interesting - but I remain quite skeptical - especially regarding "MOSS 2007 as your default option for enabling and managing social networks for business use". This situation can influence decision-making - people may prefer to evolve with Microsoft over the next couple of years as they figure this space out - especially for internal deployments.

Microsoft earlier this week at CeBIT 2009 rolled out its Online Services feature to 19 new countries (it has been available in the U.S. Online Services is part of Microsoft’s “Software + Services” strategy, with cloud-based services complementing local software functionality.

Empowering the Voice of the Customer
From Microsoft’s perspective, we in the Enterprise Search Group are excited to see more and more companies understanding how search is moving beyond just a search box to an enabler of compelling user experiences which bring the voice of the customer into the discovery, purchase and post-sale service process. Take ISP Telstra BigPond, Australia’s largest internet service provider, for example. Yesterday I had the opportunity of participating in a great webcast (recording of which I’m told will be posted to the FASTforward blog later today) with Richard Binhammer of Dell.com and Gary Koelling and Steve Bendt of Best Buy’s Blue Shirt Nation about “Putting the Social in Customer Experience”.

Docstoc: Online Document Hosting and Preview Services
With Docstoc, I can at least find examples (basic, if not best-in-class) to base my own, customized version around. Even if I already have my own templates established for any of these, Docstoc’s large library provides me with examples to benchmark with and borrow from.
Second, even though I knocked it above, the Docshots preview feature is handy if you have a dedicated documents section on your web site, since it saves people a lot of clicking, opening and closing. Written by Darrell Etherington .

When Work And Social Worlds Collide: Microsoft Outlook, Xobni & Facebook
The company offers a free Microsoft Office Outlook plug-in that you can download. For instance, I took one of my AR contacts from a vendor I cover but one with whom I do not have a Facebook relationship with as an example:
Xobni is perhaps one of the most interesting e-mail add-on applications that I've come across over the years. Once installed, it indexes your inbox and offers a variety of functions:

Extending Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 With OneNote Power Toys
Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 seems to have the best reputation out of the apps in the Microsoft Office family, due to its elegant simplicity and usability. Here is a sampling of some of the OneNote 2007 Power Toys — made by Microsoft and third parties — that I’ve found useful during my time as a OneNote user:
Send to OneNote from Outlook : I’ve been using this Microsoft-developed While you might be happy with OneNote 2007 out of the box, a number of add-ons, called OneNote Power Toys, add new functionality to the program.
