Use it or lose it (or, The importance of continuous practice)
You’ve forgotten a lot of things you used to know, haven’t you Dad? ”
This astute observation from my son came at the end of an interesting conversation we had about lunar eclipses . When I pointed the moon out to my son, he said, “It’s supposed to be a full moon tonight.” Which was odd, since what we saw appeared to be a crescent moon . “Maybe Talking with a friend this morning about the idea of “use it or lose it”, I told a story about a conversation I had a couple of years ago with my son on the subject of lunar eclipses. I wrote about that

Cynefin, concept work, and the role of deliberate practice
Over the past week or so there have been several blogs that have helped me pull together a bunch of things I’ve been trying to connect in my mind for a while.
Next was Tony Karrer and Ken Allan ’s discussion of the role of deliberate practice in the development of skills less than that of an expert, based on Tony’s question:
Any thoughts on how deliberative practice relates First was Harold Jarche’ s post Working Together , in which he looked at Shawn Callahan’s ideas on group work against the backdrop of Tom Haskins discussion of the Cynefin and TIMN frameworks.

by Thomas
In our prior post we took a look at a very interesting article by Geoff Colvin, one that dispels the notion that ‘natural talent’ was the underlying component to an individualâ??s the real path to great performance s success in life.

How to become an expert
How to become an expert Dear colleagues, Becoming an expert is not easy, but it can be done. It requires deliberate practice - lots of it - over many years. It is massive in several senses, with 42 chapters, 900 pages, vast numbers of references and weighing over 1.6kg. The book includes studies of expertise and expert performance in a wide variety of fields, including chess, mathematics, transportation, medicine and acting, studies of how to Experts are made, not born. Thats the message of a massive compendium of research reviews, The Cambridge Handbook of Expertise and Expert Performance, published last year.

You don’t get better at writing essays by writing more essays
Though perhaps a bit more rigorous in his approach, what Geoff Colvin has to say about deliberate practice in Talent Is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else is not unlike what George Leonard says about “practice” in Mastery or how Josh Waitzkin describes his process of mastering chess and T’ai Ch’i in his recent book The Art of Learning: An Inner Journey to Optimal Performance . What caught my eye about Colvin’s book, and the main reason I read it, is its relating of this
