If I want a great wiki platform, I’m going to download MediaWiki or DokuWiki (also free and they have huge support communities). As a follow on to the discussion of social learning and formal learning in Long Live … great post by BJ Schone - Have LMSs Jumped The Shark? Upgrades are difficult and cumbersome. Users hate the system. It’s ugly.

Building an open source stack for social software
MediaWiki , the software that runs Wikipedia, is also open source. It would be hard to deny that open source has changed enterprise computing in a big way. Linux, MySQL, PHP and a slew of other tools have allowed companies to test ideas and implement solutions at a fraction of the cost of some closed-commercial software. What am I missing?

He recently published the O’Reilly book, MediaWiki. MediaWiki , the software that runs Wikipedia, was selected. VistaPrint is an online supplier of graphic design services and customized printed products to small businesses and consumers. The software development organization was chosen as the first place to implement the new system.

CIL Day 1: Wikis in Action | Information Wants To Be Free
They decided to use MediaWiki in May 2005 and installed locally in July. They have a vanilla version of MediaWiki and haven’t done much customization beyond their logo. MediaWiki seemed like overkill to them and they didn’t want to spend a lot of time configuring it ( hmmm… don’t know about that. Rock on! Update: Ok, nevermind.

ended up using MediaWiki for the guides and tweaked the skin, Cologne Blue to meet our needs. wish I could recommend something to you, but I didn’t find anything like that myself when I was doing it (that’s not to say that there isn’t something like that… the documentation for MediaWiki is really disorganized).
