Community Input: SharePoint 2010
However, the market responded negatively to the social tools included within MOSS 2007. Burton Group research on enterprise social networking in 2008 found that organizations were tired of tool-by-tool approaches when it came to social tools (blogs, wikis, social networking). Strategists that dismissed leveraging MOSS 2007 for social computing will re-visit that decision in situations where SP2010 remains strategic overall OK - this is all draft - nothing is final - everything below is a work-in-progress. NewsGator Acquires Tomoye
In June 2008, I published a blog post Microsoft's Maturing Social Computing "EGO" , that outlined different ways that vendors could integrate with MOSS 2007 to provide social computing capabilities. NewsGator today announced that it will acquire Tomoye, a vendor that has long focused on enabling collaborative communities within the enterprise. I've only come across Tomoye in governmental settings but the vendor has been in the community space for some time.

  • Taxonomy in MOSS
On 21st May 2008 I presented to an audience of taxonomy professionals within the UK public sector. The last session of the day, I had 30 minutes to present on "Taxonomy within Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS): Lessons learned from real-world deployments". My aim was to briefly explain what MOSS can and cannot do with taxonomy and provide a few tips on how to leverage MOSS taxonomy features to improve information findability. The session generated quite a bit of note-taking and debate. Here are the slides: Key messages from the presentation: MOSS

  • Mike Gardner from EDS on how to keep the MOSS beast under control
There are some valuable lessons here. Technorati Tags: Mike Gardner , EDS , Microsoft SharePoint , MOSS , information management , knowledge managemen Having dropped off it entirely at one stage, these days I’m only an occasional lurker on the ACT-KM mailing list . Probably because I have SharePoint on the mind right now , this gem of a reply from Mike Gardner , who is part of the CIO Knowledge Management team at EDS , caught me attention – here is the core of what he said: “ SharePoint can be used as an information management repository for the corporation

  • 2009: Planning Considerations For Enterprise 2.0
Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007 (MOSS) is a disappointing platform for social computing in my opinion. Either Microsoft "gets it right" and delivers a forward-looking release with significant improvements that transforms SharePoint into a market-leading social computing platform, or it delivers a release that has only incremental improvements to existing functionality that reflect a backward-looking competitive landscape (circa 2008 as things get locked-down). Rather than list off a "top ten" list of predictions for 2009, I thought I would briefly layout some topics and areas that business and IT decision-makers should pay attention to when formulating Enterprise 2.0

  • Classifying content in SharePoint
This is a follow on post to Taxonomy in MOSS (SharePoint Server 2007). However, there is no way to prevent people from creating their own columns at the document library level (see image 5), beyond restricting permissions to prevent access to all document library settings and/or providing good user training. Filed in library under : SharePoint Technorati tags: SharePoint ; SharePoint 2007 ; MOSS 200 Not everyone knows that you can manage columns at the site collection level and then re-use them across libraries. Also, whilst SharePoint doesn't really do taxonomy
