The Latest from Work Literacy MORE
Post #e2conf thoughts – installment 4.
It was great to see that they have their feet planted in SharePoint 2007 and have their sights set on SharePoint 2010 too.  They have some very cool social graph and analytic features that you might want to check out. Speaking of SharePoint, I had a nice time catching up with Christian Finn and Venky from the SharePoint team at Microsoft....  What this means:  The forward-thinking ideas in 2005 about personal profiles translated into a tool that by 2007 was not particularly exciting anymore.

Install Office and find an Easter Egg
Well, not quite an easter egg of the hidden keystroke variety, but I did find something I wasn't expecting when I reinstalled Office 2007 on my computer (after re-installing the OS because of major problem - lots of fun). The source of the surprise? Microsoft themselves. Outlook 2007 comes with an ASS reader that I hadn't bothered to explore before, and the default installation includes subscriptions to two Microsoft "tips" feeds.

Caselines: Day 4 of Enterprise 2.0 Boston: Lockheed Martin & Enterprise 2.0
Shows stream of activity, so there isnt a blank page without content. It gets filled in through daily work. They built basic platform in 2007; built beta and collected feedback. Rolled out Unity earlier in 2008. There are 4,000 personal spaces, growing 10% every three weeks. Want to roll out across all of LM in 3rd-4th quarter.... Shawn said that they have a team of 40 (!) engineers working for them so they can afford custom development. There wasnt any discussion of why they used Google search. They were using "free" Sharepoint, though.

  • Informal learning - the root of KM?
Been reading through Jay Cross's new book - "informal learning - rediscovering the natural pathways that inspire innovation and performance" during the holiday break. Way more learning happens in the coffee room than the classroom, but firms continue to spend way more on formal training than informal learning - there is a huge disconnect right there.

  • Mesh working rather than Matrix working
Read this very good post by Andy Mulholland (Cap Gemini CTO) about the impact of Web 2.0 collaboration on organizational structure and working practice. Andy identifies the new working practice as Mesh working: http://www.capgemini.com/ctoblog/2007/11/this_is_going_to_be.php Here is how Andy defines Mesh working: Put equally simply Mesh working is loose coupled, for both the people and systems, relying on forming the relationships required through the 'interactions' leading to the definitions of who, and what, should be found and used.

  • It was about SOA all along!
I was recently introduced to Andy Mulholland by a mutual friend. After reading some recent articles on his blog I quickly realized I had to read his latest book about Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) titled: " Mashup Corporations. The End of Business as Usual . I ordered it on the famous mashup-rich website Amazon and started reading it yesterday. After only reading up to the end of the Introduction chapter, it suddenly stroke me: All my thoughts and ideas that initiated the articles on this blog since its creation in 2005 were calling for, relating to or assuming SOA!

  • Sucession planning and the war for talent
Dr. Larry Richard , who heads up the Leadership and Development practice group for Hildebrandt recently spoke at my firm's Partner Retreat, where he opined on a number of points. One of the more interesting dilemmas facing law firms is succession planning for all the baby-boomer partners heading towards retirement. In his presentation, 'The Talent Challenge: Lessons on Lawyers and Leaders', Dr. Richard states that the 80 million boomers in our population represent 70% of law firm Partners and are starting to retire.

  • The Age of Collaboration
Read the following article in CIO Today: http://www.cio-today.com/story.xhtml?story_id=0020006F2KP6&page=1 It starts with this unfortunately correct quote from an Accenture executive: When it comes to collaboration, many companies have a long way to go. "We are early in the cycle, maybe the second inning," says David Smith, head of the human performance practice in North America for Accenture, a global consulting and technology services firm. "Companies are beginning to attack it. Very few are getting it right.
